What is the Socratic method?

The Socratic method was developed by Socrates (470-399 BC), a Greek philosopher who discovered that by posing so many questions, a contradiction was bound to occur, exposing an issue with the original assumption, forcing students to continue to look deeper into the situation in search of the ultimate truth (University of Chicago). Asking questions helps engage students and helps them to make their own discoveries. When students are able to make their own discoveries, the information is retained better than if the student had been told what the answer was.

The Socratic method is the utilization of inquiry based learning in a seminar format. Members of a discussion go back and forth asking each other open-ended questions, in hopes of achieving the goal of a discussion: to find the truth.

It’s easy to participate! Just join a conversation and share your own thoughts or ask your own questions!

How does a discussion work?

For a discussion to work properly, and hopefully achieve it’s goal of finding the ultimate truth, there are certain things we can do to help it run smoothly.

  1. Enter a discussion with an open mind.
  2. Respect others and their opinions.
  3. Ask open-ended questions- ones that can’t be answered by a yes or no.
  4. Try to support your idea with evidence.
  5. If you disagree with something, constructively disagree with it- explain why you think something else is the truth.
